Good people of West Parish,
Last night, we entered the season of Lent. Last night, 40 of us came in from the darkness, and gathered in the cemetery chapel. Last night, we prayed our confessions, and our desire to return to God. Last night, we had ash placed on our heads, a sign of mourning, repentance and death.
Last night’s Ash Wednesday service is one of my favorites of the year. But why would such depressing themes be my favorite? Because in a world of curated images and wide-ranging anxieties, it is refreshing to face the truth. It is bracing to drop all pretense, and just be vulnerable before God.
Our Lenten journey continues this Sunday as we introduce our theme for the season, forgiveness. We’ll start with an all-ages worship activity that will help us explore: what does forgiveness even mean, and what might it look like?
