Ordinary things with tenderness

Good People of West Parish,

Last week the Christian community lost a leader among progressive faith voices, Rachel Held Evans, who died unexpectedly at age 37.

This week, we lost another wise voice, Jean Vanier, at age 90.   I’ve mentioned Vanier in my sermons – he is the founder of the L’Arche communities, where those with and without disabilities live together in Christian community.   His writing and speaking about the sacred nature of connection and love and transformation are profound.

This week as we celebrate all who mother us, all who have parented us, all who have shown us how to be beautiful, vulnerable and courageous human beings, let us remember Vanier’s words:

“Love doesn't mean doing extraordinary or heroic things. It means knowing how to do ordinary things with tenderness.”

If you wish to hear more from Vanier, this podcast is a great place to start

See you this Sunday for our youth-led service!
