Good people of West Parish,
The “On Being” radio show and podcast recently had a wonderful interview with philosopher and writer Alain de Botton. He’s the one whose 2017 New York Times article, “Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person” was the most-read article of the year - by a long shot. He thinks deeply about love, and how our culture has got it so wrong. And while this interview spent most of its time on romantic/partner love, they ventured a bit into love in the public square - and how we need love in our civic discourse, and even in our politics.
So as I drive around these days and see all the political signs for congressional candidates cluttering lawns, I can’t help but ask: will they bring love to our world? Will they embody compassion for all and an understanding of how hard life can be? Will they bring civility to our public life?
May we all seek to live in love, both in our homes and our communities. And may Jesus be our guide!
