I am having a lot of thoughts today, none of which fit together in a cohesive, lovely theme for you. So this week I simply offer a list.
I am becoming obsessed with penguins. The photo above is two fairy penguins. The lighter one on the right is an elderly female whose partner died recently. On the left is a younger male who lost his partner two years ago. They meet every night to stand together and watch the lights of Melbourne. Apparently, they stand there for hours. Yes, even penguins find moments for stillness together, especially when feeling adrift. (Photograph by Tobias Baumgaertner.)
Join us for our Quiet Day this Sunday! We'll be in Smith Purdon and the sanctuary from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. You may wish to pack a lunch or extra snack, and you are most welcome even if you are unable to stay the entire time. We will begin in Smith Purdon for an opening, and then we will each choose an activity or two for the quiet time (bibles, prayer instructions, journals, coloring pages and prayer books will be provided - or bring your own quiet, contemplative activity).
I feel compelled to say out loud that our nation's direction is becoming increasingly scary. Information and history about veterans who are black, Native American, women and LGBTQ have been removed from government websites. Protections for transgender people have been rescinded. The administration is openly defying judges' orders. I could go on and on... It feels overwhelming. Let us continue to be a supportive ark of courage for each another.
Tomorrow, March 20, is the first day of spring! And indeed, the daffodils have poked up in front of my house. Renewal and light are coming, Good People!
And Friday, March 21 is the ninth anniversary of our doing ministry together! My very first day of work at West Parish Church was March 21, 2016. Hooray for us!
