I still remember exactly where I was and who I called. I remember walking from the parsonage to the church and checking in with the other staff, and learning that one of our Deacons was on Flight 11. I remember planning a vigil for that evening, and reading to a packed, hushed sanctuary the words of Psalm 46: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change... God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved. God will help it when the morning comes.
It's unfathomable that this day was 23 years ago, when some of us were still kids. It's strange how "9/11" will forever be heavy with memory for many of us, but means little to many young people.
However we might remember - or not - on this September 11, I commend to you this twelve minute film. I mentioned it in my September 2018 sermon after the gas explosions, because it is a profoundly moving example of the goodness of ordinary people. On this day, in the midst of uncertainty and fear for our nation, in the midst of an election so fraught and divided, may we hold fast to the resilience and common humanity of our fellow Americans.
