On this hot, summery day I am thinking about grief and change. This Monday is Memorial Day, which most of us associate with barbecues and and a three-day weekend. But we all know that Memorial Day is set aside to remember and honor those who died while serving in the armed forces. And some of us will be honoring a loved one on Monday. I will be remembering my Uncle Alan, who was killed in Vietnam.
But for most of us, it's a day that might lean us - just a bit - towards death and grief. We may see the flags set next to gravestones and remember our own losses. We may hear about a "Memorial Day Sale" and our hearts might trip up on the word "memorial." We may find ourselves grieving what can not be, or what used to be.
So this Sunday, on Trinity Sunday, we will think about grief together. And then you are invited to join me in the West Parish cemetery to remember those we have lost, and to give thanks that we are people of the resurrection.
